Former Black Panther Now Supports Gun Control

By Brian Carnell

Saturday, December 11, 1999

Bobby Rush's son Huey was recently shot and killed and suddenly Rush has decided to recast himself as a supporter of gun control complaining about America's "glorification of the gun." Apparently Rush completely ignored the role that he and the Panthers played in glamorizing the gun and then using it to murder anyone who got in their way.

In fact Rush himself spent 6 months in prison in 1969 on a weapons charge! The Black Panthers called for and in some cases carried out assassinations of police and public officials as well as horribly brutalizing its own members (in a horrible irony, Huey Newton regularly whipped Panthers who deviated from his strict discipline.)

To my knowledge Rush has never disowned or repudiated his past with the Panthers, and in fact has celebrated it. He was one of several former radicals who helped support Stokely Carmichael (aka Kwame Ture) and spoke gushing words for all the things Ture had done for Africans (like standing by and saying nothing while his Guinean dictator pal Sekou Toure drove a quarter million people into exile).

The death of Rush's son is a tragedy, but Rush has more in common with the thugs who killed his son than with those who earnestly want to ban guns to end violence.
