Howard Zinn on Communism

By Brian Carnell

Thursday, October 21, 1999

Howard Zinn's discussion of Soviet Communism is oh so Clinton-esque in this interview with David Barsamian.

Zinn says he's glad the Soviet Union collapsed because now people can't point to it as an example of socialism. But why did so many people point to the USSR as an embodiment of socialism? Because so many in the American and European Left validated and embraced the Soviet Union.

Conservatives, liberals and leftists who tried to point out the totalitarian nature of the USSR were accused of aiding the cause of fascism. Zinn himself has offered written praise for Communist states such as Vietnam and Cuba where human rights get little respect and where dissenters like Zinn frequently end up in jail.
