Julius Nyere -- ZNet's Favorite Dictator

By Brian Carnell

Thursday, October 21, 1999

ZNet publishes a piece praising Tanzania's socialist founder, Julius Nyerere. Simmons blames the IMF for all of Tanzania's problems, failing to note that Nyere's attempts at collectivizing agriculture, destroying generally cooperative Tanzanian institutions, and single party rule had more to do with Tanzania's problems than the IMF. Since Tanzania adopted a multi-party democracy and free markets its back on the road to prosperity. To his credit Nyere didn't fall prey to the dictatorships embraced by so many of his fellow African leaders and he did help early in the fight against apartheid, but his economic policies helped impoverish a nation.
