Not Black Enough for Him (Carol Mosley Braun Controversy)

By Brian Carnell

Saturday, October 30, 1999

I lost the link, but saw a report where Tom Daschle hinted that Sen. Jesse Helmes was racist for, among other things, holding up the nomination of former Sen. Carol Mosley Braun as ambassador to New Zealand.

So in other words, Helms is racist because he won't allow a vote on Braun, while Braun's support of dictators in Africa apparently does not cause Daschle any qualms at all. I guess the African victims of Braun's friends just are Black enough for him (it's a Democratic Party thing -- you wouldn't understand!)

Of course, if Helms were to block the nomination of every potential ambassador who has supported a dictatorship there would never be a vote again -- and he'd have to recuse himself given his own past support for military strongmen.
