Don't Ask, Don't Tell for Conservative Sex Scandals

By Brian Carnell

Monday, November 22, 1999

In a follow-up story on the controversy at Hillsdale College that I wrote about last week, the Associated Press reports on the war of words between |William F. Buckley| and William Bennett over the Hillsdale controversy.

Bennett was on the search committee to find a new president for Hillsdale College, but quit when college trustees refused to answer questions about the sudden resignation of former Hillsdale College president George Roche. Bennett said publicly that the school needs to come clean about what really happened.

Buckley, on the other hand, promulgated a conservative version of the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy on homosexual activity when Buckley told the press, "Such questions excite the tabloid appetites. Giving them free expression can bring on moral hangovers."

So there you have it from Mr. Conservative himself -- asking people about sexual matters "can bring on moral hangovers" and have no place in or outside government. I certainly agree with Buckley, I just hope he and other conservatives are willing to follow that standard consistently.
