In a Shocking Turn of Events, Falun Gong Activist Dies in Chinese Prison

By Brian Carnell

Tuesday, January 20, 2004

According to the BBC, Liu Chengjun recently became the latest member of the Falun Gong movement to die under mysterious circumstances in a Chinese prison.

Liu was serving a 19-year prison term for his role in the helping a group of Falun Gong members to hijack the signal from a Chinese cable TV station and broadcast about an hour of pro-Falun Gong programming before China managed to pull the plug.

The BBC quoted the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy as claiming that Liu had been beaten shortly after his arrest in 2002. The BBC also quoted the Falun Gong as alleging that Liu died after being "cruel[ly] tortured" and that there were visible blood stains all over his body.

Those claims can't be substantiated or disprove directly since Liu's body was conveniently cremated without an autopsy the same day he died.

In November, the Falun Gong had issued a press release warning that Liu's life was in danger. The Falun Gong accused Chinese authorities of torturing Liu and then denying him medical care.
